Happy Halloween: Star Wars Shines

Friday, October 31st, 2008
Posted in Seasonal Features, Shopping List, Store Adore Blog, Uncategorized

It’s Halloween again. That’s a pretty big deal in my house. Actually, it’s a pretty big deal in my neighborhood. The public playground throws a party—the most attended of the year. The guy who owns the mansion on the corner hires a decorator and caterer to gussy up the entry and dining room to resemble a graveyard and haunted house, complete with fancy hors d’eouvres and libations for the parents, and goody bags for the kids. (Though at the moment, Mel Gibson’s film crews have taken the place over to shoot his latest film.) At sundown, Marlborough Street closes, and every parent and child around treks off in search of candy. The houses are decorated, some with sound effects, people sit on their porches, hand out candy and coo at the kids’ costumes. A bunch of grown-ups even get dressed up. Not I. My kids, of course, do. Last year they were FBI agents, donning blue blazers, ties and handcuffs. This year it’s all Star Wars, all the time. One will be a Clone Trooper and the other Darth Vader. See their pic above. Their friends will be various other Star Wars characters, like Babba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. If I were a more indulgent mom, I’d muster up the energy to parade around as Princess Leia. Alas, it’s not happening. However, if you are looking for some galactic inspiration this Halloween, read on, because you can battle the dark side decked out in designer pieces from our best boutiques.

Fashion junkie: noun. One who treats fashion magazines like textbooks, laps up the latest trends and passionately pursues the hottest new labels. Divine Caroline!

Here at Store Adore, we think every woman has a point of view, whether it’s questioning the reign of the dress into next season, dishing on how to get a great deal on a chain strap handbag, deciding which booties to splurge on or planning to skip the gym in favor of a sample sale tomorrow morning.

Ok. Not totally true. Believe it or not, we don’t always talk about shopping. We also like to discuss politics, art, food, love, and relationships. We just focus the content of our website on what we’re actually good at.

Fortunately, there are other women who are experts at everything we’re not. At Divine Caroline, women can write and publish stories about whatever matters to them. The site is full of words and wisdom just the way women like them - dripping with honesty. We loved the idea behind this site and became partners with Divine Caroline so that we can collaborate on all of the things that matter to women.

Check out Divine Caroline’s, stories, reviews, and forums, and don’t forget to register. (It’s free.) Read the latest Store Adore feature, titled a Goldyn store, which is located within the style section, where we also just read an informative, if cheeky, article on the latest in underwear technology (strapless g-string, anyone?) and another totally relatable feature on a makeover in the form of a new hair color. Enjoy!

Trend Alert: How the Braid Does it All

To me, it is the Elizabeth Bennet of design accents. Delicate, but extraordinary; soft, yet surprising; classic, but with just enough “oomph” to still pack a punch, braids have been popping up everywhere. But you don’t need to be an Austen enthusiast to appreciate the effect of a properly placed braid, because designers are now using this whimsical embellishment in the most unexpected ways. The interlaced construction is replacing the essential straps and supporting elements of many garments, allowing established labels to blur the lines of artistry and architecture. For instance, every purse needs a strap, right? (Ignore the existence of the clutch for a moment.) Well, Treesje transformed the necessary handles of a handbag into funky-and-fun design elements by replacing the ordinary purse strap with braids. (Below: Treesje Black Asher Bag available at Privileged, $490)

A simple black leather bag suddenly gains some head-turning appeal with the addition of a concise braided detail. The fact that Store Adore shoppers receive a special 20 percent discount doesn’t make it any less enticing, does it? The brilliance of the braid is this: it is fun, flirty and playful without being loud or unrefined. It is the perfect statement of underscored elegance every great shopper searches for but not-so-often finds. On the Treesje purse the braid adds an off-beat, unexpected charm, but here on the ADAM braided strap wrap tank (below, $185 at Goldyn, where store adore shoppers also save 20 percent) the braided cross-back shoulder straps endow an otherwise ordinary tank top with subtle femininity.

Seductively ladylike, the gentle openness of this top is so nonchalantly sexy, I just can’t stand it!

Aside from the new ways that designers are using the braid and summoning its feminine air, the most fascinating aspect of the braided trend this season is the way different materials are being intertwined. On the “Thalia” Macrame Neck Dress at Reiss (below, $540), the braid is a dazzling entanglement of gold that dances against entrancing sapphire silk to exude a sense of elegance rarely discovered off the Oscar’s red carpet.

Very few staples of adolescence manage to sneak their way into adulthood, so when the braid managed to find its way from my second-grade hairdo into my favorite, fashion-focused boutiques, I felt obligated to share the latest eye-catching trend. My advice? Rock this punch-packing style and leave your spectators wondering what hit them.
