L’Agence: Let the Good Times Roll

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

By Lauren Stillman

What’s the quickest way to score a look with star power? Step out in head-turning pieces by newly launched label L’Agence, a line developed by the crème de la crème of LA’s fashion stylists, and available exclusively at Ron Herman.

L’Agence (French for “The Agency”) was conceived by LA powerhouse agent Margaret Maldonado to give a voice to her talented stable of fashion stylists, who have collectively masterminded the tongue-wagging looks behind Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Heidi Klum and many more.

Overseen by Maldonado, the collection will be designed by different stylists every season. The debut line features everyday basics such as cotton tees, tanks and tunic dresses shaken up with a double serving of rock and roll by designers Simone Harouche, who counts Christina Aguilera amongst her clients, and Maryam Malakpour, the architect behind the looks of Heidi Klum and The Rolling Stones.

Never have closet staples looked so extraordinary.

This hybrid Henley dress ($235), made of uber-soft lightweight cotton, expertly combines the ease of your favorite wear-everywhere tee with the breeziness and elegance of a full-length dress. Paired with rugged boots, as shown here, this dress is sure to become your weekend go-to for running around the city in style.

With a simple shoe switch up, the “Maryam” dress ($185) goes from daytime errands with ballet flats to cocktail hour with a pair of notice-me statement stilettos. I’m pretty sure the shoes won’t be the only thing they’ll be looking at…

I can’t help but crave this classic v-neck tee ($110). Made from the same ultra luxe cotton as the Henley dress and a flattering cap-sleeve, the tee will add instant chic to your plain jeans and sneaks. This is not your basic Hanes.

As no look is complete without the extras, L’Agence’s debut collection features a few must-have accessories including this “bling phone bag” ($480). The compact style, complete with an easy-to-carry messenger-style strap, was designed as a way to keep your cell-phone close, while exuding effortless cool all the while. It sure beats a fanny pack!

La piece de resistance? This “rockstar scarf” ($600) is the perfect blend of boho and glam, with black sequins throughout and carefree fringe accents.

Go forth and cause a paparazzi chase of your own.

Thanksgiving Made Chic

In the past few weeks, a slew of my friends have announced that they’re breaking with family tradition (dinner at Aunt Sue’s followed by a slide show of her most recent Caribbean cruise) and hosting their own Thanksgivings. The problem is, many haven’t really cooked before, let alone prepared a bird and feast for 12.

But some handy googling (and a few too many episodes of Sandra Lee’s Semi Home Made Cooking) have them thinking that this Turkey Day will be a snap— and not just because they forgot to defrost the turkey before putting it in the deep fryer.

So at the request of my dear friends, I’ve decided to share with you the items I’ve deemed “must haves” for the upcoming holiday. Hopefully you and yours can use them to add to old traditions and create new ones, too.

Wine and turkey aren’t always an easy match—after all, will Chardonnay or Riesling pair better with those sweet potatoes and broccoli casserole your friends are bringing? With wine service Bottlenotes, my friends don’t have to worry. It’s a space where wine lovers can compare notes, share favorites, and solicit suggestions—plus it offers a wine club where you can order wines based on a personalized tasting profile.

The newlyweds are finally getting a chance to use all of that wedding registry china, courtesy of stores like the famed NYC outpost Maxwell-Silver. For such a (hopefully) colorful meal, consider choosing machine-washable and relatively plain serveware, like this simple Frances Palmer “pearl” set.

In case your relatives are the guilt-tripping type, be sure to sub in at least one recent family photo (including Aunt Jane and Uncle “crazy man” Joe) in this modular gallery frame from RedEnvelope.com. Once they’re safely down the road, you can put back that snapshot of you and your dog.

Baking’s not your strong suit? Order up a dozen cupcakes or more from everyone’s favorite, Sprinkles. Seasonal flavors like pumpkin will add a whimsical touch to the holiday. Plus, they’re portable … that is, if your guests are too full from dinner to eat them until the ride home. (For semi-homemmade types, mixes are also available).

In case guests are staying overnight, why not “whip up” one of these maple pumpkin cranberry cakes for a morning of (or morning after) treat? At $19 each, they’re one sweet deal. Available from Dancing Deer Baking Company.

Set a stunning centerpiece with these shimmering leaves. They’re $10 for 3 from PlumParty.com, where Store Adore shoppers ave 20 percent on everything. They’re simple yet so right for the holidays …and they’ll work through New Year’s too.

Shopping Boutiques for Holiday Gifts (Boston)

Posted in Five Best, Seasonal Features, Shopping List, Store Adore Blog

Pass up these presents? How could you? How could anyone?

In addition to covering the boutique scene in Boston for Store Adore, I write for a number of other local Boston publications. So, for me, the pre-holiday season means pretty much one thing: Gift Guides. I give the editors a lot of credit this year (including our own Store Adore’s Meredith). They all made their assignments early, and were quite focused in what they wanted to present, so to speak. So I went out, I scoured, I scored. And, thankfully, I have successfully (and painlessly) finished my work.

But in the wake of these guides, there are left all sorts of treasures, which I hate to see go to waste. So here you go, some of my favorite finds that didn’t make the cut. And remember, these are items in actual Boston boutiques—you won’t find them online (but we dare you to try!).

1) These wooden bangles ($30) from modern housewares haven Urban Living Studio in the South End are an updated take on old-fashioned charm bracelets and of-the-moment disc pendant necklaces. A perfect token of friendship at a great price point.

2) Bugs ahoy! These nifty, weighty lucite blocks have bugs embedded in ‘em. I’m hardly an entomologist, or even an insect enthusiast, but I was tickled by these critters. I’m thinking my little boys might find them fun too. Bug blocks (starting at $14), available at Hudson, the South End home furnishings boutique that combines good taste with great finds.

3) Beacon Hill lingerie boutique French Dressing has a new proprietress named Melissa, and boy, does she do sexy. This lacy underwire bra ($195) and lace thong ($98) by brand new label Le Coi Mondain, which means “Shy Socialite” in French is sure to rev his interest, and yours. Sure, it’s a bit pricey (though a bargain compared to La Perla, just across the Common), but the lace and detailing are incredible.

4) When you venture into the cutting edge and thus wallet-draining Louis Boston, avoid the stairs, and instead get lost in the shop’s first floor wonderland of home decor and gifts. I adore this mid-century modern style silver candelabra ($1,375), complete with black tapers. (They also do a model in black.) Surely a splurge, but it makes a spectacular centerpiece

5) I haven’t seen these snuggly tights by Hansel from Basel ($33) anywhere else in Boston besides Miniluxe, the mod Newbury Street and Newton Center nail lounge with über-girly gifts. In addition to the neutral blacks and greys shown here, there’s are also cable knit pumpkin and sage styles, complete with pompoms. I think they’ll make a perfect stocking stuffer for your sister, and mine.

Il Primo Passo: Now Servicing Shoe Addicts from Santa Monica to South Carolina

For nearly two years, Il Primo Passo has been courting the accessories addicts of LA’s west side with the promise (and delivery!) of hard-to-find-elsewhere and have-to-have-them shoes and bags. At long last, the boutique has launched e-commerce, bringing it’s unique selection of accessories to shoppers whose geographical restrictions limit them from crossing west of the 405 or even west of the Mississippi River for that matter.

To celebrate, the store is offering a 20% discount to anyone who shops the site before November 30th (enter DRSOLE at checkout).

Below is our list of five fab finds to get you through the holiday season.

1) Thanksgiving Dinner

Your mother will applaud you for such practical taste in footwear (black patent leather peep toes…classic!), but the subtle color-blocking of these Giuseppe Zanotti platforms (regularly $695) makes them stand-out in a crowd.

2) Black Friday

You can navigate the busiest shopping day of the year with ease in these chic flats by Alejandro Ingelmo (regularly $395). On your mark, get set, shop!

3) Office Holiday Party

If you find dressing for the office holiday party as stressful as leading a boardroom meeting, you’re likely still searching for the perfect dress to wear. Thank goodness we’ve found a pair of accessories that are a no-brainer. No matter what you select, the neutral shades of this gray stingray clutch (regularly $515) and gunmetal peep toe by Rickard Shah (regularly $625) make them a smart choice.

4) Christmas Day

December 25th may find you running from mom’s to grandma’s; from your family to his. The possibility of a white Christmas means you’ll want full coverage as you brave the elements (and your in-laws?). These Barbara Bui Boots (regularly $995) will do the trick. We like how the flippable cuff lets you wear them two ways.

5) New Year’s Eve

Whether your plans for the big night involve denim or dresses, a little bit of sparkle is a requirement for December 31st. These Claudia Ciuti heels pair with pretty much everything in your wardrobe—you’ll wear them to their fullest in the year to come (regularly $350).

Bonus: New Year’s Resolution

New year…new handbag. Kick of 2009 with Botkier’s Ziggy satchel ($645), featuring multiple zippered compartments to help you stick with your New Year’s Resolution to stay organized.

Sweet Dreams

Though the weather outside isn’t exactly frightful just yet (it’s 70 degrees and sunny on Chicago streets today), we shouldn’t get too comfy. Snow and sleet are guaranteed to roll in soon, and thanks to the global warming phenomenon, we could easily be wearing shorts one day and seven layers the next. Couple the impending chill with the fact that it’s dark before the 5 o’clock bell rings, and it’s hibernation time. Soon we’ll be confined to our homes, sitting under a giant blanket and next to a pile of Netflix, lamenting the lack of sunlight and subsequent pale, ghostly sheen that our complexions now boast.

This winter, I’ve stumbled upon a new challenge. I was struck by the thought a few weeks ago, when the weather actually reflected autumnal qualities. During a stretch of extra chilly days, I found that I unconsciously ditched my cute pajamas (think vintage slips and camisole/undies sets—yes, I actually wear these) that I so adore during the warm weather months, and had turned instead to old t-shirts, ratty flannel pants and my boyfriend’s oversized sweats. Okay, oversized can be cute for the first few days, I suppose, but after a week I started to feel sloppy. In my quest for keeping warm, I had abandoned my love for cute sleepwear and reached for anything with extra fabric.

It’s a pattern I repeat each year, but post-epiphany, I decided that this winter, I’m going for a sleeker sleep look. While it’s hardly scientifically proven, I think taking a little pride in nighttime outfits must contribute to confidence or something, right? At least, your sleep companion will be mighty pleased.

I love this simple nightshirt from Stellina. It’s made of comfy cotton and has that relaxed, boyfriend’s shirt vibe, but the come-hither hemline shows off a little extra leg. It’s kind of the sleepwear equivalent of a little black dress— you want to look hot, but like you’re not trying too hard. It’s available at Isabella Fine Lingerie, $64.

Along those same lines, Stellina also offers an extended version of the cotton PJ shirt with this pajama set. It’s still got a bit of the masculine pajama feel, but it’s tailored to the female form. To me, this ensemble was just made to wake up slowly on a Sunday, drink coffee and do the crossword in bed. Also at Isabella, $98.

Alright, let’s take things to a saucier level. This Only Hearts Chemise boasts lace and a soft pink color—two key elements of any good ultra-feminine look. Plus, it reveals just the smallest glimpse of what’s underneath, to remain mysterious. Sure, you might need an extra blanket or two…or will you? (Wink, wink). Available at G Boutique, $78.

Image courtesy of Agent Provacateur\'s website

No post on anything even remotely lingerie-related would be complete without an item from Agent Provacateur. And since Chicago is getting our own outpost of this legendary lingerie shop in the next couple of months (stay tuned to Store Adore for more info!), I searched the site’s comprehensive websiteAgent Provacateur, for a must-have pajama piece. Here it is, the simple Cara slip ($280). This slinky little number offers French lace, a saucy slit, and an overall screen siren silhouette.

Now to me, this is the ultimate, ultimate piece. From Huit, this comfy Francoise dress is perfect for all around-the-house occasions. Kick off your heels and throw off that confining skirt and throw this on. Wake up early on a Saturday for coffee and the paper and throw this on. Pull it on for a cozy nights sleep, don it for a 30 Rock marathon, or wear it for a day of around the house tasks. The best part? It translates easily to the outside world. Just throw on some ballet flats and leggings. From Catriona Mackechnie, $135.

DC’s best for Stylistas

Photo of Johanna Cox courtesy of the CW

Fashion-obsessed females that you are, we can only guess that you’ve been glued to TV’s latest “reality” series, Stylista, where 11 hopefuls compete for a sweet junior editor gig at Elle magazine complete with paid Manhattan apartment and H&M clothing allowance. The show it self has proved more than a little lame (apparently Anne Slowey isn’t nearly as super-biatch as she seems, but she does only eat almonds that have been “soaked in water overnight” and her fashion choices so far have been much more miss than hit). Really, if they were going to go all Devil Wears Prada on us, why not just do the show at Vogue?

But what we’re really excited about is how well DC’s own Johanna Cox, a former military analyst and author of the cult favorite (and now defunct) fashion blog, A Serious Job is No Excuse has done. Seriously, Johanna, way to knock everyone’s socks off by speaking fluent Mandarin during last week’s editiorial challenge!

[Editors’ note: former Store Adore intern Devin is also a cast member on the show.]

Thank you to Ms. Cox for proving to the national audience that yes, not only are DC girls a force to be reckoned with, but also that us Washingtonians have a serious sense of style.

And since all eyes are on the Nation’s Capital this week, what’s more appropriate than to present to you our listing of DC’s top stylish shops? Of course, there are lots of great stores in the DC-metro area, but we’re not talking about simply stocking a good selection of basics or your typical designer names. Where do the real fashionstas shop?

Here are our top five picks, from the best vintage to the hottest haute couture. So after you’re done Rockin’ the Vote, pack light and head to DC … we’re sure you’ll enjoy more than just the political pasttimes.

For high-end hip, consider Relish
DC’s style elite know that not all of Georgetown’s great shopping is located along M Street. Turn into Cady’s Alley for airy shop Relish, where for more than a decade, fashion-forward femmes (and gents) have been able to find names like Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garcon, and Narciso Rodriguez. Don’t miss the shop’s twice-yearly blowout sales … the next one is coming up the third week in January.

(Junya Watanabe dress courtesy of Style.com).

For va-va-voom vintage, consider Annie Creamcheese

Whether you’re looking for a funky ’80s prom dress for a costume event or just browsing for one-of-a-kind finds, Annie Creamcheese has something for you. The right side of this Georgetown basement boutique packs duds from the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s, while a lefthand couture selection has duds like vintage Lilly Pulitzer, Chanel, and even Manalos. There’s even a Las Vegas locale for you West-Coasters. Celebs like Kourtney Kardashian and Nicole Ritchie are fans too!

For architecturally-inspired design, consider Muleh

Fourteenth street furniture shop Muleh packs an impressive back room with duds by names like Vivienne Westwood and Ports 1961. Browse the modernist-inspired living spaces before heading to the back to do real damage with the impeccably-selected array of clothing. Top, Vivienne Westwood Anglomania.

For getting glam, consider CUSP

Neiman Marcus’ kid sister has two of its six locations in the DC area. Stylish 20 and 30-somethings love their hip looks (Marc Jacobs, See by Chloe, and Elizabeth and James are all prominently on display) as well as a sexy selection of shoes and bags by names like Christian Louboutin and CeCe Skye. But our favorite part is their frequent selection of sale merch, where you’ll snag 65% or more off the merch, often before it goes on sale elsewhere.

To bring on the bling, consider Tiny Jewel Box

Whether you’re in search of something old or something new, DC’s jewelery connessieurs know that Dupont Circle fave Tiny Jewel Box is the place to look. Whether you’re in the market for ring finger candy or just a new out-on-the-town necklace, TJB is the place to be. Don’t miss the shop’s annual top-to-bottom sale, where merch is slashed up to 70% off retail. It’s coming up in December!

Happy Halloween: Star Wars Shines

Posted in Seasonal Features, Shopping List, Store Adore Blog, Uncategorized

It’s Halloween again. That’s a pretty big deal in my house. Actually, it’s a pretty big deal in my neighborhood. The public playground throws a party—the most attended of the year. The guy who owns the mansion on the corner hires a decorator and caterer to gussy up the entry and dining room to resemble a graveyard and haunted house, complete with fancy hors d’eouvres and libations for the parents, and goody bags for the kids. (Though at the moment, Mel Gibson’s film crews have taken the place over to shoot his latest film.) At sundown, Marlborough Street closes, and every parent and child around treks off in search of candy. The houses are decorated, some with sound effects, people sit on their porches, hand out candy and coo at the kids’ costumes. A bunch of grown-ups even get dressed up. Not I. My kids, of course, do. Last year they were FBI agents, donning blue blazers, ties and handcuffs. This year it’s all Star Wars, all the time. One will be a Clone Trooper and the other Darth Vader. See their pic above. Their friends will be various other Star Wars characters, like Babba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. If I were a more indulgent mom, I’d muster up the energy to parade around as Princess Leia. Alas, it’s not happening. However, if you are looking for some galactic inspiration this Halloween, read on, because you can battle the dark side decked out in designer pieces from our best boutiques.

Mad Hatters

Last night, the temperature in Chicago was 39 degrees. 39! And it’s not even November yet. Naturally, my trip to the train this morning was extra chilly, and as my teeth rattled, my fingers froze and the chilly wind whistled through my ears, I came to the realization: it’s time to bust out the winter accessories.

Though the idea of saying goodbye to summer staples like sunglasses, tank tops and long flowing skirts elicited a tear or two, I couldn’t help but get excited when I opened my box of winter gear. Inside were hats, scarves, mittens and gloves all just waiting to be worn. But while a few of my hats will stand the test of time—my Chicago Bears skull cap included—most of my head gear looked dated and lame (a big flowered beanie a la Anthropologie, for example. Don’t laugh. You had one too.). Not at all appropriate to pair with the new coat that I so carefully picked out.

Thus I began an exhaustive online search, desperate to find my perfect winter hat. What turned up was a multitude of head gear, proving that hats are most certainly in this season. hats so stylish they couldn’t possibly keep your ears warm, as well as cute yet functional pieces that keep heads toasty while projecting personality all the way.

While it’s difficult to tell in the photo, trust me when I say that this hat looks amazing on. It’s got a very Carly Simon vibe with its wide, relaxed brim, it’s just dying to be paired with this season’s wide leg trouser denim. And while it won’t exactly keep ears warm, the large perimeter means you can pull it down slightly over your face, protecting your rosy complexion from the harsh elements. It’s available at Art Effect for $48.

Image courtesy of Art Effect\'s website

Also from Art Effect is this Butternut “skull” cap (pun totally intended). Show off your hardcore side with this hand-dyed, hand-knit wool hat, sure to add a bit of edge to any winter outfit ($48). Pair with a scarf for maximum awesomeness.

Along those same lines (ie. ultra-cool, not too flashy) is this cassette tape beanie from Brooklyn Industries ($28). Nothing beats getting a mix tape from a dude you’re crushing on.

This hat by Maison Martin Margiela, comes in at a higher price point ($106) at Hejfina. But it bucks the trend of creating hats from wool or felt— it’s made from blue towel. You’ll be the only kid on the block to have one, and how could a thick towel not keep your ears warm?

This wool beret fills the wardrobe’s need for anything amethyst this season, and has a small bit of DIY vibe that looks right at home in front of a snowy backdrop. While designer Eugenia Kim utilizes a unique spiral knit on this piece, she has also created similar berets with cable knit and lattice patterns. Find itat Intermix for $198.

And last but not least, the creme de la creme of hats (for fur-lovers, anyway), a VOB black fox fur hood, complete with extra fur embellishments dangling from the edge of chains. The overall look is something out of a Hans Christian Andersen story, but the chains add slight rock and roll appeal, even if your attire is utterly innocent. It’s also at Intermix, for $625.

Fur is a Four-Letter Word

Perhaps it relates to the impending political election, but the air seems to be thick these days with opposition. Republican vs. Democrat. Alternative energy vs. Off-shore drilling. Tax cuts, gun control, health care. You name it, they’ll debate it.

This season, fashion seems to have followed suit, with designers serving up their own opposing issues. Maxi dresses vs. Mini skirts. Grungy plaid vs. Rock star leather. Real fur vs. Faux.

For those of you who tend to side with Pam Anderson’s PETA pals over fur-tastic fashion stylist (and Bravo TV star) Rachel Zoe, we’ve uncovered three faux-fur finds to rival their less animal-friendly counterparts.

This rich chocolate jacket by Elijah ($627 at Revolveclothing.com) is the perfect topper for everything from denim to dresses this fall. It gets its lush mink look from a blend of acrylic and cotton…but who could tell?!?!

Make a statement with this uber-glam leopard print cropped stunner by Adrienne Landau ($298 at Intermix). It’s another great piece for the day-to-night girl on the go, and it’s oh so fierce!

Leave it to the Juicy girls, makers of all things luxe and cozy, to deliver a faux-fur jacket we would like to snuggle up to. This adorable faux-fur jacket by Juicy Couture ($478.00 at Eluxury.com) features a waist-cinching velvet belt as well as a super comfy quilted cotton lining.

Cost-effective and socially-conscious…these candidates get our vote for fab finds of the fall season.

Madonna: So Sweet

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008
Posted in Our Latest Obsessions, Shopping List, Store Adore Blog, Uncategorized

Earlier this week I saw Madonna in her Sticky and Sweet concert in Boston.

When my friend first invited me, I thought I could re-visit teenhood with an armful of rubber bracelets, lace anklets and a pink “Material Girl” tank top. My husband convinced me otherwise. “She’s all about re-inventing herself,” he reminded me. Right. (Note: For pictures of Madonna through the years, see Vanity Fair.)

While I’ve followed Madonna’s romantic exploits as closely as anyone, I admit I’ve been a bit out of touch with her techno-rap-like tunes. So, I popped in her CD in the car. (Who buys CDs you ask? The same friend who got the tickets.) After suffering through over four minutes of dance tunes and Timberlake accompaniment, I decided I preferred the Madonna of yesteryear, at least as far as the music was concerned.

With only one day to go, I did a cursory search on Madonna Style so I’d know how to dress. In this area Madge, is much improved. Lots of shiny black, from track pants with rhinestone stripes and a cami, to satin dresses and lace up boots. OK, I wouldn’t be wearing a bustier bodysuit with fishnets (ever), but this is a look even I could pull off.

While I’ll spare you a photo of myself, here are some Madonna-worthy pieces we can all consider.

PS. She looks (and sounds) AMAZING.
