vfish Comes Home

By Molly Each

Even if you don’t know vfish designs, you know vfish designs. Chances are, you’ve spotted the brand’s dresses, tops and sweaters from across the room; you’ve seen them hanging on the racks of your favorite boutiques; or maybe you’ve even take one of th comfortably chic, utterly wearable pieces home. Regardless of how your relationship with vfish began, one look at the Chicago-based line and you were probably instantly involved in a serious relationship. How could you not be? vfish fits every qualification on your list: Clothing that hugs your body just right? Check. A line that flatters, constantly? Check. Pieces that you are proud to show off anywhere? Check. Duds that are comfortable enough to let you be yourself? Check. Apparel that you want to stick around for seasons to come? Double Check. It seems you’ve found your designer soul mate.

Now, us Chicagoans don’t want to brag or anything, but as of late vfish has been paying us an awful lot of attention. See, they’ve just opened up a flagship shop in Lincoln Park, giving their wearable designs a permanent home. vfish admirers are rejoicing, as not only does the store carry an impressively large selection of vfish clothing, but it’s also the home of the brand’s studio and showroom, meaning that brand new designs, samples, and one-off pieces will be at shoppers fingertips almost instantly. After one trip around the new store, I quickly discovered vfish’s best quality: it’s affordability. The price point is almost jaw-droppingly low; an unexpected treat for a designer flagship shop.

In the past, Chicagoans have gotten their vfish fix at Mint Julep and Sara Jane, and that likely won’t change— these shops’ laid-back, sophisticated clothing selection compliments vfish to a tee. But it’s nice to know that an expanded array of the line’s tops, dresses and skirts exists somewhere in the city.

So to give you guys a feel for this line, I’ve picked a few of my favorite pieces— a to-buy priority list for me; a brief overview for you:

Image courtesy of the vfish website

The Beth dress ($113) is sleek, simple and slimming. The mini-hemline plays into the season’s trends, while the top is conservative enough for work. Check out the gorgeous, subtle pleating up by the collarbone.

I love the slightly poofed sleeves on this Tara jacket ($120). The oversized buttons are playful, but the overall look is polished. It will pair perfectly with a trim skirt and tights at work, or be a more exciting dinner-and-a-movie top when added to a pair of jeans and a plain white tee.

image courtesy of the vfish website

This sweater ($87) may look Plain Jane, but a small scoop in the back divulges just the right amount of skin. Plus, I love the length! It’ll never ride up over the midriff when you raise your arms, and it offers a crisp, lean silhouette.

A cute cocktail dress ($193) in a color that will brighten any room—and chase away any winter blahs. The back zipper is exposed, too, giving it the tiniest dose of edge.

Image courtesy of the vfish website

I don’t know about you guys, but I practically live in cardigans in the fall and winter. Partly because I get cold easily and partly because I just love the layered look, but I have a collection that is overflowing out of my drawers. However, I’ll still scoop up this cute 3 button cardigan ($87). It’s just fitted enough, just loose enough, and it pairs with nearly everything.

The vfish flagship store is located at 2937 N. Clark, 312-423-7839, vfishdesigns.com. Store Adore store profile coming soon!

Chicago Fashion Week, Part 2

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

By Molly Each

And we’re back to Chicago Fashion Week (see Fashion Week, Part 1, here), the Windy City’s week-long showcase of our place in the style world. When we last met, I had given you the lowdown on the Gen Art Fresh Faces show, one of the most highly anticipated and coveted shows in the lineup. Given it’s prestige, and the way that the show can catapult designers to national recognition, I gave it it’s own post two weeks ago (then took a Fashion Week break to give you guys the lowdown on some killer boutique deals featured in our ABC segment—priorities, girls), but that doesn’t mean the rest of the shows aren’t on the level of Fresh Faces. Au contraire my friends. Fresh Faces might have the stellar reputation, but the shows that followed were equally as jaw-dropping, with Chicago talent giving anything on the coasts a run for their money.

While I’d love to do a post on the dozens upon dozens of designers who were showcased all week, I’m going to be a bit more succinct (for those of you who are sneaking this read during office hours), and just choose a few designers from each show whose looks had me ready to sprint out of the tent, through Millennium Park, and to the nearest store, excited to revive my wardrobe with these fashion forward looks from designers poised to burst onto the scene.

Dress Code: A showcase of the top talent from design programs at The School of the Art Institute, Columbia College, International Academy of Design and Technology, and the Illinois Institute of Art. (While there were loads of incredible looks that night, I’ll only show my total favorite since the student lines aren’t available at stores yet.)

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Designed by Reginald Ilagan, this gown was easily the showstopper of the Dress Code show. Sleek and sophisticated, it still had the eye-bugging impact that’s necessary at any top event (or on the red carpet, of course). Keep an eye out for this Columbia College student. While he’s still a neophyte, and his work is not yet available to the general public, there’s no doubt his pieces will soon appear in stores—or on a stunning ingenue at the Oscars—soon.

World Fashion Chicago: Utilizing Chicago’s 27 Sister Cities as a tie-in, designers with some sort of loose relation to that country were shown. The diversity was incredible, as everything from saris to big ballgowns to sleek architectural looks paraded down the runway.

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Steven Rosengard, who was auf’d by Heidi Klum on Season 4 of Project Runway, has become a household name in Chicago since his reality stint. While he may be remembered for his wedding gown massacre (the challenge that saw him eliminated), Rosengard is actually quite a talented designer. While it’s a shame that we never got to see his true talents on display in front of Nina, Michael, Heidi and the gang, they were out full force at the World Fashion Chicago show. Turns out he’s got an eye for flouncy, fifties-esque, feminine gowns and separates that can be toned down for work or amped up for happy hour.

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Visit his website for more information—especially brides, as his custom-made wedding gowns (he’s come a long way) are garnering major buzz around Chicago.

My personal favorite Chicago designer, Melissa Serpico (image above) represented Milan, Italy. She’s making a name for herself with her Serpico line across the globe with structured, expertly constructed garments that often use old-fashioned techniques in their creation. At the Sister Cities show, she demonstrated her knack for sophisticated yet fun garments that know no expiration date.

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Find Melissa’s work at Michelle Tan, Lissa on Maxwell, or at her website. FYI - Serpico is opening her own storefront next month! Stay tuned to Store Adore for more details.

Allure of Couture: A look at Chicago’s more established designers, who showed off looks that accurately demonstrated their point of view that were truly at the next level. Look after look made the tent nearly gasp with delight.

Maria Pinto is all over the place lately. As Michelle Obama’s atelier (think gorgeous teal Democratic Convention dress), she’s poised to—possibly—follow in the footsteps of Oleg Cassini in the days of Jackie Kennedy. Her looks are fashion forward yet wearable, and are favored by Chicago’s elite. Does the name Oprah ring a bell?

Here exquisitely crafted garments impeccably hug the female form, feature fab details like sequins and feathers (tastefully used, of course) and stand out in every room.

Chicago rejoiced when Maria finally opened her first storefront, located at 135 N. Jefferson, 312-648-1350. Scoop up her goods there, if only to take in the elegant decor or hang out in the bedroom-sized fitting rooms.

Another favorite of mine is Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, a wunderkind with an expert eye for intermixing close fit with blooming volume. Her fabric choices are lush, and her inspiration comes from mind-boggling sources. For example, her fall collection was inspired by the central nervous system. What?! I know. Check her out.

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Find Abigail’s creations at her website, or at p.45 in Bucktown.

While I adore Maria Pinto and Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, for me, Vatit Itthi stole the show. His use of color was astounding, his garments draped expertly, and I wanted to run backstage and grab nearly every garmet he showed. These are garments meant to be worn Here are two of my favorites:

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

I mean, come on! I’m especially captivated by the pink dress, which is about as feminine as you can get. I want to wear it everywhere, from a swank gala to around my house. Find Vatit Itthi pieces on their website, or at Helen Yi.

Macy’s Designers of Chicago Show: While featuring the six designers chosen to participate in the Macy’s Design Incubator (Macy’s gives them workspace, helps foster their designs and sells their clothing for a year), they also showcase other local designers shown also sold at Macy’s. I love this, because post-show you know exactly where to scoop up the clothing.

Image courtesy of the City of Chicago

Anna Fong’s designs have gained a small celebrity following, having been seen on Kimora Lee Simmons and former Miss Universe Dayonara Torres. Her clothes are feminine and incredibly wearable; basic with a splash of something extra.

Find Anna Fong’s designs at her website, at Macy’s, of course, but also at Malabar boutique in Bucktown.

5p1t stands for 5 pockets-1 tee, a riff on the classic jeans and t-shirt combination. Hailed by Fashion Group International as a rising star, they do stunning basics but throw a few heavyweight fancier duds in the mix. This cocktail dress (below) uses plenty of current trends—asymmetrical neckline, a belt, pleating— but it doesn’t go over the top. And the shade of red, unlike many crimson hues, is super flattering.

Find 5p1t at Macy’s and at their website. Until they start to hit the big time, that is.

It’s easy to get distracted from fall fashion when you wake up to headlines about a tanking economy each morning (or at least to feel guilty obsessing about shopping as much as we normally would). But just because we’re tightening our purse strings doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice those can’t-live-without seasonal wardrobe additions. Stunning deals can still be found at boutiques around the city—if you know where to look.

Don’t have the time for a sartorial scavenger hunt? We’ve done the work for you. Taking in the unseasonably warm weather (as well as the crunch of leaves underfoot), I spent the weekend walking from neighborhood to neighborhood, scouring boutiques far and wide for deals that made the faltering economy an (almost) distant memory. With a $120 self-imposed limit, I wasn’t sure I’d find much, but thankfully, I was proven wrong. Turns out you don’t necessarily have to turn to department stores or discount retailers when money is tight; many boutiques still provide high-quality, unique fashion fare, but at prices that will make your bank account sing. Plus, Store Adore also offers exclusive discounts at many of these shops, so you can get even more bang for your even more limited buck.

Here are a few of my favorite budgetary finds, along with a few insider tips that make even seemingly out-of-range boutiques affordable.

Sure, the first thing you might see in Gray Boutique is an expensive Susana Monaco dress. But give yourself a little time to hunt through the racks—your persistence will pay off. Next to the high-priced goods, there are several pieces of equal elegance that ring in at a far lower price point. This mustard BB Dakota retro-inspired cardigan is a good example. At only $60, it fills this autumn’s need for a beautiful mustard piece, and the subtle sparkle makes it pair as well with a black pencil skirt as it does with jeans. Insider tip: Head to the back of Gray for the shop’s $40 rack, which is updated each Friday with both regularly priced and sale pieces.

Let’s face it ladies—I’ve spent a fair share of my salary on $350 jeans. But frankly, those days are behind me. With our sputtering economy comes the need for jeans that still fit curves, and your price range, too. Stop by The Blues Jean Bar for a pair of Anoname denim. With fits that run the gamut from skinny to wide leg, these designer jeans come in at a nearly miraculous $100! I haven’t seen denim that affordable in years. And since Store Adore shoppers save 20 percent at The Blues Jean Bar, I can afford to scoop up a t-shirt too. Click here to get your discount.

Catherine Malandrino Dress

Watching the cash flow can make style mavens panic when it’s time to shop for big events. Is it really possible to find a fete-worthy dress for a reasonable price? Answer: absolutely. Stop by Beta Boutique to comb through the shop’s massively discounted designer duds. It’s an ongoing sample sale in this adorable shop, which means lines like Geren Ford, Madison Marcus, Twinkle, Cynthia Rowley, Rachel Pally, Serfontaine and many, many more are always at least 40 percent off their original price. I don’t know how they do it, and I don’t really care as long as I can scoop up frocks like this sequined Catherine Malandrino for $150. Did I mention it was marked down from $795? Did I mention I love this store? Did I mention that Store Adore shoppers save $10 on a purchase of $50 or more. Click here to get your discount.

Luii coat

In Chicago, coats are an essential—and usually expensive—wardrobe element. This wool blend coat by Luii, also available at Gray, adds a bit of a mod aesthetic to any outfit, as well as a bit of warmth, for only $120. Plus, it’s light enough to wear over a thick sweater as temps start to plummet.

Covet dress

Even if the market says otherwise, the dollar has even more value for most of us lately. So important to be buy items that are meaningful—like this Covet sweater dress from Pivot, an entirely eco-friendly boutique. Made from organic and sustainable materials, it gives a boost to Mother Earth as well as to your bank account. With a $119 price point it’s an absolute steal, as it can be donned with tights or jeans, with heels or boots, with delicate jewelry or big ol’ baubles. It’s a veritable wardrobe in it’s own right.

Available at Pivot, 1101 W. Fulton Market, 312-243-4754, pivotboutique.com.

black bag from Bess and Loie

Nothing speaks louder than an absolutely bangin’ bag hanging from a woman’s arm. But to be honest, I’ve never been able to justify spending hundreds of dollars on a purse (dresses on the other hand…well, to each her own…). So I’m so grateful that Bess and Loie, harbinger of gorgeous, buttery bags, has a small section of the store devoted to beautiful purses priced around $100. And these aren’t palm-sized clutches either. They’re big, bold, and well-made. How does Bess and Loie do it? The store’s keen-eyed crew scours the wholesale markets and selects the best of the best at fair prices. Sure, there’s no big designer name attached, but that would be the last thing on my mind when carrying this black bag that only set me back $88.

Seriously, what’s better than an over-sized clutch? It can hold phones, cameras, and multiple lip glsees, and it still fits under your arm and lays neatly on any table. While it’s hard to tell in this pic, this clutch is actually the size of a copy of Vogue, and comes complete with a strap for maximum versatility. This clutch is one of the best things to come out of accessory shop shebang— a 20 percent Store Adore discount is another. The clutch is regularly priced at $68, but it’s only $54 with the Store Adore discount. Click here for details.

Nabi necklace

Let’s move on to jewelry. It’s the quickest way to take an outfit from grunge to glam to goth. I’m absolutely in love with this Nabi Design necklace. While lots of nature-inspired jewelry is priced in the multiple hundreds of dollars this season (when it’s hot, it’s hot), this 14k gold filled necklace is simple, chic and fits the trend perfectly. I’m still stunned that it’s only $58 ($46.40 with the Store Adore 20 percent discount), also at shebang.

Alex and Ani bracelets

Okay, last one from shebang, I promise! That store is just so affordable; it gets my shopping pulse racing. This set of three expandable bracelets from Alex and Ani is a must for maximizing any accessories wardrobe. Each one is beautifully delicate on its own. Stack them together and you’ll get that effortless piled on look. The set of three is $32—$25.60 with your 20 percent Store Adore discount.

Recycled magazine bracelets

Eco-chic is definitely in, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. These quirkily chic bracelets are made from recycled magazines, and are only $17 each. They demonstrate your commitment to the environment (but divulge nothing about your bank account) with a flash of the wrist. They’re vailable at eco-boutique pioneer Pivot.

Necklace from Pivot

This necklace is also from Pivot. The pink pendants look like glass or stones, but they are actually made of the tagua nut, a nut that comes from a native palm tree found in South America. When you factor in re-forestation, that’s a lot to support for just the $25 cost of the necklace.

One of my favorite spots is a little gem called SoKo, positioned neatly in the Ukrainian Village area of Chicago. The owner doesn’t stock anything over $100 (except for the occasional $120 winter coat). While this is amazing when it comes to clothes, stocking up on accessories here will set you back less than a night out at the bars. Check out three of my picks—each one is less than $25:

watch from SoKo

This watch combines major gold sparkle with interwoven thick gold cloth, making it much lighter than a typical watch without losing a bit of the bling effect ($24.99).

earrings from SoKo

These earrings are elegant enough for a night in your little black dress, but can be dressed right down for everyday wear ($19.99).

sterling silver ring from SoKo

It’s always great to have a ring or two to help show off your manicure (done frugally at home, of course, in front of a screening of the latest Project Runway). This sterling silver ring features a hammered silver circle about the size of a quarter. Best of all, it’s adjustable, so you can switch it between fingers for desired impact ($14.99).

All available at SoKo, 1925 W. Chicago, 773.592.1089
