Take Two: Jasmine Sola Reborn

Posted in Headlines

Hey, wait a minute. Last time you walked by Jasmine Sola it was shut down, closed, out of business, kaput. Yet thi stime, beyond the plate glass windows, you see the usual racks and shelves of colorful clothing. You wander in. Hmmmm, what’s going on? It’s as if you’re in a time warp–it looks the same as it did before the doors shut.

A quick inquiry with the young salesgirl sets you straight: same owner, different name. It’s now 344 three forty four, named for the original Jasmine Sola shop at 344 Newbury. So far there are three 344 stores: 344 Newbury, the Pru, and Derby Street Shoppes in Hingham, with two more to set to re-open any day in Newton Center and Wellesley.

According to an article in the Boston Globe, Jasmine Sola founder, Luciano Manganella, will also be opening three new shops, in Dedham, Lynnfield, and Nashua, and is negotiating the leases on the old JS locations in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Lexington, and Peabody. As for the former stores in Harvard Square or on Commonwealth Avenue near BU, don’t hold your breath.

Word on the street is that 344’s vibe is going to more closely mirror Manganella’s original vision, rather than the overly trendy venue that it became when since New York & Co. acquired it from him. We understand this to mean more refined looks created with lesser known, up and coming labels.

A quick look around the Prudential Center outpost confirms the rumors. Though the decor is identical, there is less inventory, creating a less junked up feel from the boutique of yesteryear. (Whether this is on purpose or simply that they’re not fully stocked is hard to tell.)

The pieces are a little bit nicer, more pulled together, less night-time party girl. Gone are the multitudes of shiny, slinky, barely there dresse and piles of gold-tone costume jewelry. Instead, we found frocks printed with florals and geometric patterns, beachy dresses and some leggings and yoga clothing. The denim selection is as impressive as before - we counted about ten different brands. There are only a few styles of shoes, instead of the impressive array of sandals, flats, flip flops, and Pumas, but keep an eye out, perhaps they’re ramping up.

The clientele is pretty similar - a couple of women in their thirties looking at tops, a couple of college girls surveying jeans, and a throng of twenty-somethings trying on daytime dresses. We overheard snippets of conversations “used to be Jasmine Sola . . . original owner . . .” and “I love all the different colors.” We also chatted with a few customers, including Ivy and Mia, pictured below.

StoreAdore: Did you know that Jasmine Sola had gone out of business?

Ivy: Yes, I knew.

StoreAdore: What do you think of the store now?

Ivy: I’d say it’s basically the same. A lot of the same brands, but not as many clothes in stock.

StoreAdore: Did you shop here before, when it was Jasmine Sola?

Mia: Yes, all the time, for years. But I definitely like it better now. I

StoreAdore: Why? What’s different about it?

Mia: It’s more like it used to be back in the beginning, when Jasmine Sola first opened. It’s not as flashy, there’s not as much stuff, so you don’t have to search through as much to find you like.

We like that.
