Events & Sales: Shop for a Cause (New York)

posted 05.06.08 by meredith

We’re all about women helping women helping women. So meta. . . and such a good thing. That’s why we’re so excited about the Spring into Summer Boutique, an event this Thursday in Manhattan. Here’s how it works: In Good Company Workplaces is community for women entrepreneurs to both work and network—rent a desk, have a meetings, commiserate, etc. It was founded by two enterprising women (look out for our upcoming profile of co-founder Adelaide Fives) in order to help women leverage one another’s talents and experiences.

On Thursday, May 8th, from 6:30 to 9:30, more than 20 vendors of (most of them women) will be at In Good Company Workspaces selling their clothing, handbags, jewelry, and more. A portion of the proceeds will go to Nest, which provides micro-credit loans to women artisans in developing countries. Shop lines like eco-friendly fashion collection Nature vs. Future, Odette New York jewelry (see the adorable acorn necklace, $84, at left), and Rissy Lyn handmade picture frames.

Do we hear a last-minute Mother's Day gift calling?

Ready for Take-Off (Click Here for more jet-setting stores).

posted 05.06.08 by Store Adore

When catching a flight means showing up to the airport four hours in advance, praying you don’t get pulled out of line for the random screening, and fighting your way to the front of the luggage claim later, it’s no surprise that several boutiques are stocking goods just for plane-prone shoppers. If you have to elbow your way through LaGuardia, at least do it in style!

Flight 001 (West Village, Carroll Gardens, Third St)
Flight 001 covers the essentials of traveling: toiletry bags and luggage (with a notable selection of bags for men), ranging from classic black Samsonites to fun wheelie bags from Orla Kiely in army fatigue and geometric car prints. Flight 001 will remind you of the oft-overlooked necessities like a folding travel alarm clock, small empty bottles to store your favorite products (and still meet travel regulations), iPod speakers and your own meal kit complete with spork. No time to stop by the store? Not a problem: the Flight 001 website is also fantastic. It's where we picked up this bon voyage luggage tag (pictured above, $17)!

Go Mamma Go! (DC)
Literally packed to the rafters with items collected from all over the world, Go Mamma Go! has a collection of travel accoutrements. The tables toward the front of the store display a selection of world maps, journals, luggage tags and travel guides.

WishingFish.com (Ecommerce)
Soon to become your favorite source for quirky yet always thoughtful gifts, this online-only boutique is guaranteed to stock something that’s not only suitable but also happily received for every occasion, such as luggage tags with attitude (“I’m pretty sure this isn’t your bag”) that can send a well-traveled friend off right. The site covers categories like travel, gourmet, baby, and desk accessories—and with reasonable prices (many things cost around $30), a promise of quality and a liberal return policy, you may suddenly be feeling very generous this year.

Five Best: Japanesque

posted 05.06.08 by Store Adore

From cherry blossoms and calligraphy to tigers and fans, prints inspired by Japanese images are showing up on tops and dresses in silks and chiffons. Here are five fabulous examples of how you can embrace the Far East.

The red silk top by Falls (shown above) looks equally gorgeous paired with black or white bottoms (make ‘em skinny), though you could even do with a dark denim. Let the top slide off one shoulder for a bit of casual sex appeal. Slick your hair into a low ponytail and you’re ready for a cocktail party or dinner out. Available on Newbury Street at Mahri, $186, where you can find fashions that are artsy, sophisticated and fun.

This silk chiffon fan top by Rachel Mara is light, airy and totally summery. Wrap it around a black or ivory cami, tie the sash around your teeny tiny waist, or wear it low slung on your hips. Available at Turtle, $250, the South End boutique that showcases au courant fashions by emerging designers.

Boston designer Daniela Corte Design does a calligraphy-inspired ink blot style print silk jacquard top with boat neckline, 3/4 length open sleeves, and asymmetric hemline. Available online at Daniela Corte, $265, or by appointment at the designer’s Newbury Street studio.

Look closely; this pink and white kimono style silk jersey dress has a tiger face printed on it. Designed by New York based, former musician, Amanda Uprichard, it’s vibrant enough to be a statement piece, but versatile enough to work with jeans, trousers, or bare legs. Available at First Date, $168, a North Andover boutique with cute clothes by your favorite labels.

The Requiem Dress from Edun, the socially responsible label created by U2’s Bono and Rogan Gregory, was made in the company’s own factory in India, where long-term employment is a goal. This silk twill piece has a relaxed silhouette, with full sleeves that have cinched cuffs and ties. We love the cherry blossom print against the dark background, as well as the signature leaf zipper pull in back. Available at Envi, $295, Newbury Street’s boutique where the décor and designs are all eco-friendly.

Store Adore Supports: Interview with Ted Alemayhu of U.S. Doctors for Africa

posted 05.06.08 by Store Adore

Store Adore sat down with Ted Alemayhu, founder of the U.S. Doctors for Africa charity. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopa, Alemayhu's life took a dramatic turn when he was accepted into a prestigious boarding school program in Santa Barbara, California. Years later, he applied his business and accounting background to start a new charity: U.S. Doctors for Africa, an organization that provides much-needed medical care to African countries, helping to alleviate the tragedies and hardships Alemayhu encountered as a child.

SA: What inspired you to start U.S. Doctors for Africa?
TA: Growing up in Africa, I witnessed firsthand the extreme shortage of medical professionals throughout the continent. As a direct result, millions of people have died and continue to die due to lack of basic medical care and treatment. Currently, it is estimated that there is only one doctor per 100,000 people. This is a devastating statistic! I started U.S. Doctors for Africa to mobilize volunteer healthcare professionals from the United States and deploy them to Africa to provide medical care to those who need it most, and to teach and train local healthcare providers to create a self-sustained future within the continent.

SA: What are your goals for the organization?
TA: We've been in existence for the past nine years, and we started by sending medical workers to several countries in Africa, such as to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa, as well providing medical supplies to Sierra Leone. Our program is growing and spreading to more countries now. We plan to expand to Ghana, Liberia, Botswana, Kenya, Congo and Senegal. We are working in partnership with each country's health ministers as well as non-governmental organizations and UNICEF. We have also started reaching out to the large population in "rural Africa" where most people have no access to medical care at all. Our new initiative is to introduce Mobile Clinics to Africa, which would allow us to bring medical care and training to millions of people these rural areas. We are very proud of how far we've come.

SA: How can we help?
TA: As of today, over 3,000 medical professionals have expressed interest in volunteering to with us, which is quite exciting! More than ever, we need sponsorships and financial donations to help pay for deploying these medical teams to Africa. To send one doctor for a month-long volunteer work costs approximately $6,000 US Dollars. Every little bit helps. Store Adore shoppers can make a big difference with whatever amount they are able to contribute.

She Made Your Lunch; Now Make Her Day

posted 05.05.08 by meredith

She let you stay home when she knew you weren’t really sick; she dropped you off a block away from the party, and she stayed out of the basement when your crush came over to “watch TV.” Mother’s Day’s only days away, but there’s still time to find a gift that honors everything she’s done for you. These sites boast no brainer gifts for the mother who. . .

Let You Eat Chocolate Cake for Breakfast
For the Mom whose pantry all the other kids envied, shop at Dancing Deer, purveyor of treats that look as extraordinary as they taste, trust us. Our pick: the Mother’s Day Medley (Regularly $39.95, Store Adore Price $32—pictured above)—it’s packed to the brim with strawberry shortcake, chewy blondies, iced shortbread cookies and other scrumptious goodies. (Just don’t say they’re better than hers.)(Plus, Store Adore shoppers get 20 percent off all Mother's Day treats. Use code adore8.)

Always Lent a Helping Hand
She organized bakesales, drove all the kids to camp, and even chaperoned all your dances. (Sweet.) Why not show her that you actually noticed with a set of serving hands from quirky modern home store Mxyplyzyk ($28)? Designed by Nigella Lawson, another sexy chef, these solid beechwood designs let her mix with your hands without looking gauche in front of company.

Kept the Peace
When sibling rivalry hit a high note or dad’s car came home in an altered state, Mom was always there to broker an accord. For the skilled diplomat in your family, offer this 18 karak gold plate olive branch pin from Ann Hand, the DC-based destination for elegant jewelry with a political twist (Regularly, $65, Store Adore Price $49). (Plus, Store Adore shoppers save 25 percent on this patriotic collection. Enter code StoreAdore in the gift message at checkout, some restrictions apply.)

Slathered You With Sunscreen
It felt like torture then: The sand and surf were yards away, yet you were forced to withstand a full-body rub down at SPF 30. Decades later, you’re still boasting milky soft skin, and you finally admit that you’re grateful. Help mom continue to practice what she’s always preached with a Summer Essentials Kit from all-natural Greek beauty brand Korres ($42). Find the kit, complete with watermelon scented sunscreen, after sun yogurt cooling gel and more at the Wooster Street flagship in New York, or buy it online at Sephora.

Showed up at Soccer Games in Chanel
Thank Mom for her handing down her fabulous fashion sense with accessories that complement her designer duds. Luna Boston’s got droves of stylish somethings that can be slung over the shoulder, clutched or wrapped ‘round the wrist—all at 20 percent off for Store Adore shoppers. With its roomy interior and of-the-season shade, this Matt & Nat Bowler Bag will take her seamlessly from the field to the firm dinner (Regularly $140, Store Adore Price $112). (Use code storeadore at checkout, some restrictions apply.)

Replaced You with a Yorkie
True, she may have a new “baby,” but can you really blame her for not wanting to be left with any empty nest? Give your little sister a chic place to sleep with this Hepper Pot Pet Bed from Design Public. Serving as your pet’s personal sanctuary, it’s fleece-lined and sturdy—a doggy’s dwelling never looked so good.

Told You So
Feed her just-because-she-cares tendencies with The Manual of Things That Might Kill You, a revolutionary work on the world’s worst maladies from Knock Knock, a clever line of paper-based goods (pads, organizers, sticky notes and more) for folks who either way too much to do or not enough to do at all—sense of humor required. (Use code StoreAdore at checkout to save 15 percent off all purchases of $50 or more.)

Was Never Afraid of Sharing Her Well-Earned Wisdom
“Never count your chickens. . . ” “A watched pot won’t. . . ” If your mom’s got a saying for every situation, give her some new material (not to mention something to chew on) with the Spring Basket from Good Karmal ($45-$75). Old fashioned caramels in flavors like chocolate, sea salt and vanilla come individually wrapped with a witty fortune.

Seasonal Features: Cuatro Excuses to Shop for Cinco de Mayo

posted 05.05.08 by Lauren

Andale, andale! As if we needed another excuse for shopping (or margaritas), Store Adore is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with special finds to bring a little spice to your life long after tonights’s tequila hangover has worn off. 1. Sexy senoritas will love this shoulder-baring frock (above) from Hollywould. The romantic ruffles add the perfect hint of flirtation, and the vibrant salmon color will look amazing against a golden summer tan in a few short months. Muy caliente!

2. True Religion’s “Phoebe” tote ($398) available at True Religion stores nationwide) is made of authentic Mexican sarapes to add south-of-the-border flair to your wardrobe year-round.

3. Next time you have your amigos over for margaritas, serve them in style with hand-painted glasses from Uncommon Goods ($180 for set of six). The colorful striped stems will keep your guests from embarrassing mix-ups with their glasses, unless, of course, you're mixing the cocktails with a heavy hand,

4. Set the ambiance for your next fiesta with a Pineapple Cilantro candle from Milena's Boutique in Los Angeles ($48, click to buy). These scrumptious-smelling candles perform double duty: not only do they add a subtle scent to any room, but the 100% soy wax doubles as an excellent skin moisturizer as it melts.

Salud!

Fresh Faced Florals

posted 05.04.08 by Abby

Every May Day, florals abound: dogwoods litter the walk home; sodden soil gives way to beds of tulips, and the shops take their cues from nature. Though blossoming prints are a staple every spring, spring/pummer 2008 cultivates fresh takes on a traditional style.

Stella McCartney's Pumasillo print lends the flow of oil paints to an abstract garden in a silk-cotton blend. The colors in this luxurious dress stand apart, as the designer eschews pastels for bright primaries and their muted complementaries ($1,695).

Leave it to the princess of prints, Diane Von Furstenberg, to remix the ordinary: her florals come to us by way of Tahiti, in this strapless Birds of Paradise stunner. The twist detail on the bust has to be our favorite bit ($425).

Visit Intermix, online mecca of hot-hot trends, for a rotating crop of blossoming frocks. (Note to Store Adore Shoppers: You can also receive an exclusive $50 off a purchase of $300 more when you shop here.) This week we love the Catherine Malandrino Sambala babydoll, in white pintucked cotton trimmed with oversized flowers in unusual tones of grey, green and purple ($425, shown here). Development's Floral Sketch dress in jersey takes another painterly approach, with Impressionistic strokes of neons and lovely contrasting subdued hues ($258, shown above).
